The generic folate used in many dietary supplements is an artificial, synthetic substance which cannot be found in nature and cannot be directly utilised by the body. Additionally, many producers offer folate supplements with highly pure active L-methylfolate, but this does not necessarily correspond to a high absorption rate. Active L-methylfolate is always bonded with a salt, and the form and quality of that salt plays a major role in determining the bioavailability of the folate. We have therefore not only considered the purity of this product, but also other features such as the crystalline structure of the salt, its concentration, and the stability of the L-methylfolate, in order to ensure the high bioavailability of our folate supplements. Magnafolate® Pro, with at least 99.9% (6S)-L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate, is ultra pure with regard to the active 6S isomer, which contributes to a high bioavailability. Similar products on the market often offer only 50% of this isomer and have noticeably lower bioavailability.
Moreover, Magnafolate®Pro is the only product on the market that delivers L-methylfolate bonded with crystalline type C calcium salt. In comparison to type I calcium salt, this variety is more soluble and therefore more bioavailable, which is reflected by a "first pass absorption rate“ of 76%. Other salt forms offer a rate of only 56%.
Other folate products may also combine the active L-methylfolate with its geometric variant R-methylfolate, but this second form cannot be utilised by the body. Some forms of methylfolate can contain up to 50% of this ineffective variant, thus further inhibiting the already difficult absorption process of folate and leading to a first pass absorption rate of only 38%. Magnafolate® Pro, however, combines purity, bioavailability, and stability for an ideal absorption of this vitamin.
The only other ingredient is premium gum arabic, cultivated without the use of plant protection products. In contrast to microcrystalline cellulose, a widely used synthetic filler often mixed with nanoparticles, gum arabic is a natural, fibre-rich food. Our fair trade gum arabic is climate neutral and is sustainably cultivated to conserve resources.
For the capsule shells we use custom-made HPMC capsules that, unlike most other HPMC and pullulan capsules on the market, are 100% free from controversial additives such as carrageenans and PEG. We then package this product in environmentally friendly amber glass.
