How are we different?

Conventional omega-3 supplements typically consist of fish oil; however, many fish species show high levels of contamination with heavy metals, microplastics and other toxins and is often problematic from an ethical and ecological perspective.

We have therefore opted for 100% vegan, completely plant-based omega-3 derived from natural algae oil. Microalgae are not only an ethical and sustainable source of omega-3 fatty acids, they also contain many other valuable phytochemicals and – unlike fish – show no measurable contamination with environmental toxins.

Our most EPA-rich omega-3 oil is obtained from the microalga Schizochytrium sp., which exhibits one of the highest plant-based contents of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). In contrast to other vegan omega-3 products, this alga does not supply the inactive precursor alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), such as is found in linseed oil and which must first be converted into the active form, but rather directly provides the bioactive omega-3 fatty acid DHA.

To achieve the particularly high content of EPA and DHA in the optimal 16:9 ratio, the delicate omega-3 fatty acids are gently enhanced to a significantly higher concentration using high-pressure fluid technology.

The algae are cultivated in closed fermentation systems that do not affect the sensitive ecosystem of the seas. Our omega-3 oil therefore has no negative impact on fish stocks or the natural food sources of marine animals.

Our omega-3 oil is virtually iodine-free (< 0.1mg iodine/kg): the iodine naturally present in algae is not fat-soluble and is almost completely removed during the manufacturing process. The sunflower lecithin acts as a natural emulsifier and stabilises the high-quality algae oil. The combination of rosemary extract and mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) ensures effective protection against oxidation for the sensitive fatty acids. Our careful formulation preserves the freshness of the fatty acids and guarantees long-term quality and shelf life.

Due to our optimised manufacturing process, which excludes oxygen, the sensitive omega-3 fatty acids can be protected in the best possible way.

We use environmentally friendly amber glass jars for the packaging of this product.

Effects

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are a special category of unsaturated fatty acids. They form an integral part of bodily cell membranes and are a precursor of important tissue hormones. Eicosanoid tissue hormones formed from omega-3 fatty acids influence several important bodily functions including brain and heart functioning.

The biologically active omega-3 fatty acids are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The EFSA has so far approved the following statements on the effect:

Daily Requirements

The EFSA recommends a minimum daily intake of 250mg DHA and/or EPA omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and considers a daily intake of up to 5g to be within safe limits.
